EXHIBITIONS INCLUDING WORK FROM BOTTOM OF THE DRIFTLESS
FIGGE ART MUSEUM
September 2026 - January 2027
I am honored that this image “Sale Barn,” from Bottom of the Driftless, will be on exhibit at the Figge Art Museum from September 5, 2026 through January 10, 2027.
The photograph is part of the the 44th Rock Island Art Guild Fine Arts Exhibition, hosted by the Figge Art Museum. The exhibit was an open call for artists within 200 miles of the museum, an area from Chicago to Des Moines.
Livestock sale barns, such as the Maquoketa Livestock Exchange pictured here, are more than places to buy and sell animals. In many rural communities, they also serve as gathering places where farmers and neighbors catch up, exchange news, and strengthen the social fabric of small-town life.
This image is from my series Bottom of the Driftless. The work documents the rhythms of a family homestead, the work in surrounding fields, the character of nearby towns, and the encroaching wildness of the woods and bluffs. Together, the photographs are a meditation on place, exploring the enduring relationship between land, time, and belonging along the southern edge of the Driftless region.

MAQUOKETA ART EXPERIENCE

I am excited for the opportunity to return to my hometown - and to a gallery along the “bottom of the Driftless” - to share my latest project.
Centered on a place called Wayward Farms, Bottom of the Driftless documents the rhythms of a family homestead, the framing of adjacent fields, the character of nearby towns, and the encroaching wildness of surrounding woods and bluffs. It is a meditation on place, weaving together themes of land and belonging while considering the culture, politics and economics of this unique region in the American Midwest. This photograph is centered on the family farmhouse and my granddaughter Ella - her hair blowing along with the grass and her pink outfit matching the early buds of a nearby plant - taking part in an annual Easter egg hunt.

POLK COUNTY HERITAGE GALLERY

I am pleased to once again be included in the Iowa Exhibited show at the Polk County Heritage Gallery, this time with one of my favorite images from my Bottom of the Driftless project.
The gentleman resting on the front loader of a tractor was attending an auction of farm equipment at the Highway 64 Auctions in Baldwin, Iowa. This work is centered on a place called Wayward Farms and documents the rhythms of a family homestead, the framing of adjacent fields, the character of nearby towns, and the encroaching wildness of surrounding woods and bluffs. Bottom of the Driftless embraces the particular beauty of this place: its contradictions, its endurance, and its quiet insistence on being seen.
